According to the statistics bureau, one of the reasons for the lower visitor numbers was “the prevention and control measures imposed” in various places against the pandemic.”
Chinese New Year celebrations took place on 11-17 February, but mainland citizens were encouraged not to travel during the holiday to help stop the spread of Covid-19.
About 56% (or 240,933) of Macau’s visitors came from the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area, with 106,452 of them visiting from the Zhuhai region. Total mainland visitors were 380,649, a 426% year-on-year increase. An estimated 40,037 travelers came from Hong Kong and 6,410 visited from Taiwan. Visitors who used the Individual Visit Scheme (IVS) was reported to be 163,157 and overnight visitors increased by 226% to 245,309, while same-day visitors rose by 124% to 181,813.
The first two months of 2021 saw the number of visitors to Macau decline by 67% year-on-year to 983,887.
