Okada Manila permitted to launch online gaming service

Universal Entertainment Corporation has announced that Tiger Resort, Leisure and Entertainment Inc - its subsidiary operating the Okada Manila casino - has received approval from the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp (PAGCOR) to enter online gaming. The decision was dated 19 April.

Online gaming includes table games and electronic gaming machines. The casino is also the first venue in the Entertainment City in Manila to be approved for such an online service. “The system is scheduled to go into operation after clearing various conditions,” said the group.

Universal Entertainment also noted it will use the momentum of its approval for online gaming and will “continue to develop online sports betting gaming using its proprietary technology.”

PAGCOR approved Tiger Resort’s request to launch an online service on 15 April, as long as the group complies with the set requirements; those include a system that is capable of being audited for proper determination of taxes and licence fees, the service must be able to prevent minors/banned persons from playing, and the system must also be able to include other safeguards such as prevention of money laundering and enforcement of responsible gaming.

However, the regulator noted there should be no proliferation of online/remote gaming and the group should provide testing and simulation of the service.

Back in December 2020, PAGCOR stated three of the casinos in the country are eligible for the new PIGO (Philippine Inland Gaming Operator) licence, which would permit them to offer their services online to the domestic market. Okada Manila was one of the contenders, but it is unclear if the approval for online gaming means the casino obtained the PIGO licence as well.
