Manila and Goa casinos closed amid new lockdowns

New lockdowns have been announced in both Manila and Goa as both regions aim to curb the spread of Covid-19, with casinos now closed as part of the measures.

Metro Manila is to remain under modified enhanced community quarantine until 14 May, with the Covid-19 countermeasure having been scheduled to expire on 30 April.

It includes the Entertainment City zone of casino resorts, a number of which have taken to their websites to confirm the news that operations have been suspended.

Solaire Resort & Casino (pictured), for example, explained: “In compliance with the Modified Enhanced Community Quarantine guidelines issued by the government, we are currently unable to accept bookings, and reservations until further notice.

“We have temporarily suspended our gaming operations until the enhanced community quarantine is completely lifted or adjusted.”

Goa chief minister Pramod Sawant meanwhile announced a four-day lockdown in the western Indian state as it reported its sharpest single-day rise in active cases on Wednesday. The new lockdown began on Thursday evening, and is expected to remain in place until 3 May, with casinos and restaurants to suspend their operations throughout the lockdown.

Vehicles entering from neighbouring states will not be permitted, while tourists will be required to remain in their hotels. Sawant added that the new lockdown is unlikely to be extended.

Casinos had been given the green light just one week earlier to operate at 50% capacity during opening hours, after the government imposed a night curfew from 10pm to 6am.
