South Korea to announce highest level of restrictions in Seoul

The South Korean Government is considering placing the highest possible restriction level on Seoul, as Covid-19 cases in the country continue to grow.

"If the situation is not under control after monitoring for two to three days, it might leave us with no choice but to impose the strictest of all social distancing levels," said Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum.

Currently, the capital and surrounding areas have had their movement restrictions extended by another week, according to Reuters. Kim has also urged citizens to get tested preemptively "to protect not just yourself, but everyone in your family, friends, school and the country."

Imposing the highest social distancing level would see a closure of non-essential venues, such as casinos, bars or gyms. The population would also be required to stay at home.

There are three casinos in Seoul, catering to foreigners only, and the properties all had their revenues impacted by the ongoing travel restrictions and safety measures.

Neighbouring country Japan is also struggling with the pandemic. Japan’s Government is prepared to announce the fourth state of emergency for Covid-19, just a few weeks before the 2020 Olympics.

Under the renewed measures, bars and restaurants cannot serve alcohol to guests, and businesses are required to close in the early evening, according to Asia Gaming Brief. It’s predicted that the state of emergency will run throughout the Olympics until 22 August.

While Japan doesn’t have an established casino presence, pachinko halls will likely be most impacted by the renewed restrictions. The pandemic countermeasures seem to further underline the demand for online betting, as well as the viability of integrated resorts in Japan.
