The 33-year-old former Scotland international is said to have placed 52 bets on football matches between March 2017 and February of this year, a period in which Maguire played for clubs including Oxford United and Bury.
This would represent a direct infringement of FA rule E8, which stipulates that participants can not “bet, either directly or indirectly, or instruct, permit, cause or enable any person to bet on the result, progress, conduct or any other aspect of, or occurrence in or in connection with, a football match or competition.”
Lincoln City confirmed in a club statement that Maguire has been suspended “without prejudice until further notice,” with the player able to respond to the allegations until 30 August.
An FA statement noted: “Chris Maguire has been charged with misconduct in relation to an alleged breach of the FA’s betting rules.”
Maguire joined League One-side Lincoln in July 2021 on a two-year deal, after previously playing with teams including Sunderland, Sheffield Wednesday and Derby County.
Maguire, who was capped twice for Scotland in 2011, began his career at Aberdeen, where he played from 2006 to 2009, before being put out on loan to Kilmarnock and eventually securing a permanent deal with Derby County.
