The Ioway Casino has hit a roadblock in relocating from its current location to an adjacent set-up.

Jacob Keyes, Iowa Nation Chairman, stated: “The plan was to begin construction in April 2024 and have the casino open by mid-2026.”

However, this vision is proving challenging. Complications first arose when Governor Kevin Stitt's office rejected the tribe's proposal for an exit ramp off the Turner Turnpike in 2019.

At present, to gain access to the Ioway Casino, guests have to take a five-mile detour through Wellston.

Jacob Keyes, Iowa Nation Chairman, cited the Covid-19 pandemic as an additional hindrance to the delays that may ensue in construction.

The main issue lies in the gaming compacts proposed by Governor Kevin Stitt, which the Iowa Tribe finds unfavourable. Only two tribes have signed the new compact, with others rejecting it, including the Iowa Tribe.

The absence of a turnpike exit directly to the resort's parking lot poses a potential slowdown in foot traffic and revenue, which has put a temporary stop to the hotel construction.

Despite these challenges, Keyes remains confident these issues can be resolved through communication with supportive members of the legislature.

As the Ioway Casino navigates these hurdles, Chandler residents must await developments on the envisioned gaming oasis and are yet to see its potential impact on the local community.
