In Pura, Tarlac, Nilasin 1st Elementary School welcomed the opening of a new two-story, six-classroom building on 20 December.

The construction, funded by the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) at a cost of nearly Php18m ($324,580), addresses the need for additional learning spaces following the devastation caused by an earthquake over three decades ago.

The earthquake of 1990 impacted Pura, damaging essential infrastructure, including schools. Despite numerous attempts at restoration, some buildings were deemed unsafe, intensifying educational challenges within the community.

Mayor Freddie Domingo sought aid from PAGCOR to address these challenges. PAGCOR responded by allocating Php17.87m to erect an earthquake-resistant building at Nilasin 1st Elementary School, aiming to create a safer and more conducive learning environment.

Expressing appreciation, Mayor Domingo said: “We extend our heartfelt gratitude to PAGCOR for their invaluable support in funding the construction of a new classroom facility in Pura. This generous contribution not only enhances our educational infrastructure but also empowers the future of our students. PAGCOR's commitment to education is truly making a lasting impact on our community. Thank you for investing in the growth and development of Pura.”

This development occurs amid the financial recovery of the Philippines gaming industry as reported by PAGCOR, with its gaming revenue approaching levels seen before the pandemic. It is also one of many efforts by PAGCOR to connect the gaming sector with communities in the Philippines, with others including a community and education event held earlier in December
