Indonesian Government to conduct internal gambling investigation
Online gambling practices within ministries and agencies will be subject to investigation.
Local news reports indicate that the Indonesian Online Gambling Eradication Task Force is set to launch an investigation into suspected gambling activities within the nation’s governmental ministries and agencies.
The Online Gambling Eradication Task Force was initially established last month and is overseen by the coordinating minister for political, legal and security affairs, Hadi Tjahjanto. At present, the task force is preparing for the investigation by compiling a list of names of government organisations with employees suspected of gambling.
Following the completion of this initial phase, the investigation will then progress with the Financial Transaction Reporting and Analysis Center tracking any suspicious bank account activity. Although there are no details of which organisations or individuals are under investigation, the final phase of the investigation involves the Criminal Investigation Agency of the National Police bringing suspects to court.
Gambling is currently outlawed in Indonesia – however, there has been a recent flurry of gambling-related news in the nation.
Last month, Indonesia’s Minister of Communications and Informatics revealed that findings from the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center highlighted a range of illegal gambling activities with ties to money laundering. Also in June, the nation’s President stated that there would be no social aid for online gamblers, however, help would be on offer to the family members affected by problem gamblers.
Most recently, all Network Access Point (NAP) Service Providers were urged to cut ties with foreign internet lines, particularly those from the Philippines and Cambodia, as they are suspected to be serving illegal online gambling sites.
