The Charity Commission has concluded its investigation into GambleAware without issuing any criticism or findings against the organisation.

This decision follows a period of scrutiny initiated by a complaint questioning GambleAware's independence and its adherence to its charitable duties.

The investigation was prompted by a complaint from the Good Law Project earlier in 2024. The complaint raised concerns about GambleAware's independence and the quality of its services.

Zoe Osmond, GambleAware CEO, refuted the claims, describing them as based on misleading and outdated information. She stressed that GambleAware's governance and commissioning practices ensure that the gambling industry does not influence its operations.

She also addressed the potential negative impact of inaccurate media reports on the credibility and reputation of essential support services, underscoring the importance of maintaining trust in these services to effectively reach and assist individuals struggling with gambling-related issues.

Now, commenting on the closing of the case made against GambleAware, Osmond stated: “The Charity Commission has written to GambleAware to confirm the case has been closed without criticism, or findings against, the organisation.

"The Regulator has stated unequivocally that they are ‘assured that the trustees have taken appropriate steps to both ensure its [GambleAware’s] independence from the gambling industry and to address reputational risks arising from its current funding model.’

“Importantly, the Commission has also stated it is ‘satisfied that the Charity’s reliance on industry funding does not impact on decision-making about its activities.’

“We were pleased to see the Commission acknowledge our robust policies and governance processes as well as the important role our Lived Experience Council plays in providing advice and direction to our activities, among others.”
