Gamstop reports increase in self-exclusion registrations for 2024

Gamstop has reported a substantial rise in new registrations during the first half of 2024. The organisation recorded an average of 1,904 new registrants per week, totalling 49,494 since January.

This brings the total number of individuals enrolled in the scheme to 482,815 since its inception in April 2018.

April 2024 marked a particularly significant month with 8,686 new registrations – the highest monthly figure in Gamstop’s history.

The Euro 2024 football tournament also appeared to influence registration numbers, with an 8% increase observed during the first half of July compared to the same period in the previous year.

Another notable trend is the decreasing average age of registrants. One in two new registrants in the first half of 2024 were aged 16-35, with a 12% year-on-year increase in the 16-24 age group. Despite this, gender distribution remains skewed, with 71% of registrants identifying as male.

Nearly half of the new registrants opted for the maximum five-year exclusion period.

Commenting on these findings, Gamstop CEO Fiona Palmer stated: “The increasing number of registrations we have seen in the first half of 2024 could reflect a growing awareness and proactive approach among individuals to tackle gambling-related issues.

“Particularly concerning is the 12% year-on-year rise in registrations among 16-24-year-olds, indicating the urgent need for targeted support for younger age groups and preventative education to this demographic.

Gamstop’s mission remains steadfast: to provide a crucial safety net for those struggling with gambling. The continuing rise in registration figures affirms the importance and effectiveness of our service in helping people reclaim control over their lives.”
