Gamstop reports surge in self-exclusion among under-25s

Key points:

– Gamstop reported a 31% increase in self-exclusion registrations among 16-24-year-olds in the second half of 2024

– A regional breakdown showed Hull, Teesside and Sunderland as the areas with the highest percentage of registrants

Gamstop has reported a 31% increase in registrations among 16-24-year-olds in the second half of 2024.

Overall, under-25s accounted for nearly one in four (24%) of all new Gamstop registrants, reflecting a growing trend of young adults seeking self-exclusion tools to manage their gambling habits.

For the first time, Gamstop has also released regional data, highlighting the areas with the highest proportion of registrants.

Hull topped the list with 1.5% of the local population registered, followed by Teesside and Sunderland at 1.4%.

Doncaster and Blackpool were also among the top five regions with the highest self-exclusion rates.

The majority of users (48%) in the second half of 2024 opted for the longest available self-exclusion period of five years.

In response to user feedback, Gamstop recently introduced a new ‘5 years with auto-renewal’ option, allowing individuals to extend their exclusion without manual intervention.

Good to know: In total, 532,484 individuals have registered with Gamstop since its launch in April 2018, representing over 1% of the UK’s adult population

Commenting on the recent results, Fiona Palmer, CEO of Gamstop, stated: “The increase in the number of under-25s registering for Gamstop has become an accelerating trend, with a 31% year-on-year increase in the second half of 2024, following a 12% increase in the first half of the year.

“There is a clear need for targeted education and support aimed at this group which is why we continue to put so much emphasis on collaborating with Ygam and Gamcare reaching out to students.

“We go to where they are to ensure they are aware of tools, such as self-exclusion, which can help to prevent gambling harm.”
