New York FY2024-25: Mobile sports betting handle up 20% to $23.9bn; GGR up to $2.14bn

Despite March Madness dominating the basketball calendar, it wasn’t enough to push the month to the top of the board.

Key points:

- The mobile sports wagering handle for this past year was $23.9bn, with $2.14bn in GGR

- March Madness supported this with a $2.4bn handle in March alone

- However, the highest month was January, with many people possibly betting on Super Bowl

The New York State Gaming Commission has published its results for mobile sports wagering between April 2024 and March 2025.

The mobile sports wagering handle increased 20% year-on-year for a total of $23.9bn, with a gross gaming revenue (GGR) of $2.14bn.

The highest performing month for sports wagering was January, which could perhaps be explained by increased activity ahead of the Super Bowl LIX event.

January recorded a $2.48bn handle and $247m in GGR, which was narrowly followed by March’s figures with a $2.44bn handle and $161.8m in GGR.

Other high performing months include December with a handle of $2.28bn, November with $2.27bn and October with $2.32bn.

However, from the GGR perspective, following January the best performing months were November with $231.6m, September with $204.7m and May with $203.3m.

Good to know: Every month between April 2024 and March 2025 broke the $1bn handle milestone for the first time since mobile sports betting was legalised in 2022

The New York Gaming Commission notes that $23.3m also comes from prior adjustments, fines and penalties – with perhaps part of this could being attributed to the $17.5m fine from Underdog alone

From these totals, $1.11bn will be given to support education in the state; including $6m towards gambling education and treatment purposes and $5m to youth sports activities and annual awards to sports programs for underserved youth.
