Key points:
- Casino Cosmopol in Stockholm has closed in response to new ownership instructions issued by Swedish Government
- Svenska Spel is focusing on employee support and transition planning following the closure
Svenska Spel has closed Casino Cosmopol in Stockholm with immediate effect, following the Swedish Parliament’s decision to end land-based casino operations by 31 December 2025.
The closure follows revised ownership instructions received on 24 April. All remaining land-based casino operations will now gradually close in accordance with the new directive.
Approximately 240 employees are affected. Dialogue with trade unions has begun and a career fair will be organised for employees in Stockholm, similar to those held in Malmö and Gothenburg.
Casino Cosmopol operated under a state monopoly. Closure required a formal change in the ownership instructions, which has now been confirmed following union negotiations. Previous closures include Sundsvall in 2020, and Gothenburg and Malmö in February 2024.
Good to know: The operator has started the sales process for the listed property at Kungsgatan 65 in Stockholm
Ola Enquist, Casino Cosmopol CEO, stated: "We have initiated union dialogue about the closure so that it will be as good as possible for everyone. Just as we did with the closures in Malmö and Gothenburg, we will organise a career fair for our employees in Stockholm with several invited companies."
Anna Johnson, Svenska Spel President and CEO, added: "For over 20 years, Casino Cosmopol has offered an international casino experience to guests from all over the world."
Alongside the closure of Casino Cosmopol, Svenska Spel had reported SEK1.88bn in Q1 2025 revenue, marking a shift in the company’s operations. This also follows the appointment of Lotta Sjöstedt as Chairwoman of Svenska Spel.
