Key points:
- The Swedish Gambling Authority has banned three companies (EOD Code SRL, Igloo Ventures SRL and MIBS NV) from accepting Swedish bets due to illegal marketing practices
- Additionally, More Tech Group is under supervision for compliance with telephone sales, credit restrictions and identity verification requirements
The Swedish Gambling Authority (Spelinspektionen) has issued bans against three unlicensed gambling companies – EOD Code SRL, Igloo Ventures SRL and MIBS NV – for illegally targeting Swedish consumers.
According to the regulator, the operators used affiliate marketing, advertising banners on Swedish websites and influencers on platforms such as Instagram and Twitch to reach players in Sweden without holding the required national licence.
In a separate move, Spelinspektionen has initiated supervision proceedings against More Tech Group, a licensed operator behind platforms such as lottoexperten.se, lottoexperten.com and superlottoclub.com.
The review will assess the company's adherence to several provisions of the Swedish Gambling Act (2018:1138), including written consent requirements in telephone sales, compliance with the prohibition on offering credit and verification of customer identity against the national self-exclusion register, Spelpaus.
Good to know: The regulator emphasised that all bans and enforcement actions are publicly listed on its website in an effort to increase transparency and awareness
The crackdown on illegal operators and the monitoring of licensed firms reflect broader efforts by the Swedish Government to tighten regulatory oversight.
Earlier this year, the National Audit Office criticised the Gambling Authority for insufficient inspections and inadequate follow-up procedures.
In response, the Government has launched a review of the Gambling Act and committed to strengthening enforcement mechanisms.
