This marks a return to growth following a 4.5% decline the previous year.
Key points:
– 2024/25 Hong Kong racing turnover rose 3% to HK$138.85bn, with record commingling activity
– Over 1.7 million attended live race meetings, including a 110% increase in Mainland China tourists
– Hong Kong champions secured 11 Group 1 wins
The Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) has reported a 3% year-on-year increase in total racing turnover, reaching HK$138.85bn ($17.6bn) for the 2024/25 season. This marks a return to growth following a 4.5% decline the previous year.
The growth was attributed to a combination of enhanced jackpot offerings, larger field sizes and increased international engagement through the Club’s commingling and World Pool strategies.
Hong Kong races drew record commingling turnover of HK$31.76bn, a 10.1% rise from last year, with major racedays such as the Chinese New Year Raceday setting new benchmarks.
Total racecourse attendance exceeded 1.7 million, boosted by a 110% increase in Mainland China tourists. Major racedays, including the BMW Hong Kong Derby and FWD Champions Day, each attracted 9,000 tourists.
On the track, horses like Ka Ying Rising, Romantic Warrior and Voyage Bubble delivered standout performances, securing 11 Group 1 wins and elevating Hong Kong’s international racing reputation.
Good to know: Romantic Warrior became the first Hong Kong-trained horse to win G1 races in four countries, while Voyage Bubble clinched the Triple Crown – a feat not seen in 31 years
Commenting on these results, HKJC’s CEO, Mr Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges, stated: “It’s been an amazing season, with outstanding performances by top horses that have truly captured the imagination of fans not just in Hong Kong but around the world.
“Since the Policy Address of HKSAR Chief Executive John Lee, we have been able to attract even more Mainland and overseas tourists, who have come to our racecourses in record numbers to experience our city’s signature sport for themselves.
“These achievements strengthen the position of Hong Kong racing as a world-class sport and entertainment experience. They have also made an important contribution to Hong Kong tourism as well as underlining Hong Kong’s vital role as a centre for East-West exchange.”
Looking ahead, the HKJC plans to raise Group 1 prize money to HK$208m for 2025/26 and begin hosting race meetings at Conghua Racecourse in October 2026, further expanding its footprint in the Greater Bay Area.
