KSA expands Objections Advisory Committee with appointment of Jaap Wieland

Key points:

– Jaap Wieland has been appointed as the third chair of the KSA’s Objections Advisory Committee for a three-year term

– Wieland brings expertise in administrative law and experience from the Council of State and the University of Amsterdam

The Netherlands Gambling Authority (KSA) has appointed Jaap Wieland as the third independent chair of its Objections Advisory Committee, effective as of 15 July 2025.

Wieland joins current chairs Adriane Koppe and Monique van Oers and will serve a three-year term in the position.

The Objections Advisory Committee plays an important role in reviewing and advising on regulatory objections raised by licencees, applicants or other stakeholders within the Dutch gambling market.

With this latest appointment, the committee gains additional legal expertise at a time when regulatory oversight in the sector continues to intensify.

Wieland is a seasoned lawyer specialising in general and economic administrative law. His background includes roles as a lecturer at the University of Amsterdam’s Faculty of Law and as a legal professional at the Administrative Jurisdiction Division of the Council of State.

His experience is hoped to further strengthen the committee’s ability to handle complex regulatory cases.

The appointment comes amid increased regulatory activity from the KSA. Last month, the authority issued warnings to ZEbet and Starcasino for imposing unfair withdrawal terms on customers. Both operators took swift action to update their terms and avoid further penalties.

The KSA has also stepped up efforts to tackle illegal gambling advertising. It recently announced a more aggressive campaign targeting marketing agencies and online media outlets promoting unlicensed operators. These efforts aim to safeguard consumer protection standards, particularly with regard to vulnerable players and the enforcement of the Cruks self-exclusion system.
