Macau group calls for joint action to improve casino workplace standards
Proposals include staff adaptation periods, better typhoon contingency plans and broader career development.
Key points:
– Macau United Citizens Association urges Government and casino operators to improve working conditions
– Calls for buffer period for staff when gaming table layouts are changed
– Recommends clearer typhoon work guidelines and diversified career pathways
The Macau United Citizens Association has urged the Government and the city’s casino operators to work more closely in creating a better workplace environment for gaming employees, as reported by the Macao Daily.
Association Executive Director Tong Ho Lam noted that the gaming industry remains Macau’s largest employment sector and plays a crucial role in the city’s economy. She said that, while smart gaming table systems have improved operational efficiency, frequent changes to betting layouts require the replacement of felt surfaces, forcing frontline staff to constantly adjust to new procedures.
Without time to adapt, mistakes may occur, sometimes leading to warning letters and additional work stress. Tong suggested that operators provide a transition period for staff whenever table layouts are altered to ease pressure and encourage a more positive response to operational upgrades.
Tong also highlighted concerns over work arrangements during typhoon season. She said the unpredictable changes in typhoon signals often result in unstable overtime schedules for staff who are required to remain at their posts in severe weather.
She urged the Government to coordinate with casino operators to review and enhance contingency plans, including clear attendance rules during signal No. 8 or above, improved transport arrangements and fair compensation schemes.
Good to know: Frequent betting layout changes require staff to adapt quickly, sometimes with little training
She further noted that the industry’s previous boom led to a concentration of young employees entering the sector at the same time, which could cause a wave of retirements in the future and create job stagnation.
To address this, Tong called for more diversified leisure and tourism projects to strengthen Macau’s position as a world centre of tourism and leisure, while offering broader career progression and horizontal development opportunities for workers.
