KSA issues warning to TonyBet for prohibited betting offer

Key points:

– The Netherlands Gambling Authority (KSA) has issued a warning to TonyBet for offering bets on the Ballon d’Or and the FIFA Club World Cup Ballon d’Or winners, which are not permitted under Dutch gambling laws

– TonyBet confirmed no bets were placed and stated it will review its sportsbook offerings to prevent future issues

The Netherlands Gambling Authority (KSA) has issued a warning to TonyBet regarding the offer of betting options that contravene Dutch regulations.

The bets in question related to the winners of the Ballon d’Or and the Ballon d’Or awarded at the FIFA Club World Cup.

Dutch law allows sports betting only on events defined by objective and verifiable performance in officially recognised sporting competitions.

The Ballon d’Or awards are determined by votes or jury decisions rather than on-field results and therefore fall outside the scope of permitted betting markets.

Following the Ksa’s contact, TonyBet confirmed that no wagers had been placed on these betting options. The company indicated it would enhance monitoring of its sportsbook platform to ensure compliance going forward.

The case involving TonyBet demonstrates the regulator’s ongoing oversight of betting market compliance in the Netherlands.

Good to know: Licensed providers must restrict bets to official sporting events recognised by national or international sporting bodies and operators must report any unauthorised offerings to the KSA without delay

Recently, the KSA has issued several warnings to gambling operators for compliance breaches. Last month, the KSA warned Zebet and Starcasino after players were initially prevented from withdrawing funds, though both casinos avoided further sanctions by promptly ensuring payouts.

Earlier, Optdeck received a double warning from the KSA for violations related to gambling advertising and autoplay features. In February, the KSA issued a warning to TonyBet for failing to provide 24/7 Dutch-language telephone customer service, highlighting regulatory expectations for operator accessibility.
