ATG reports 5% NGR dip as gambling tax rises

Key points:

– ATG has released its H1 2025 financial results

– Operating profit was impacted by a hike in gaming taxes from 18% to 22%

ATG has reported its financial results for the first half of 2025.

In total, net gaming revenue (NGR) came to SEK 2.6bn ($236.6m), down 5%, with the group’s total revenue of SEK 2.9bn following a similar 5% downturn.

Overall, horseracing was down 5%, sports betting 3% and casino 13%, reflecting an overall decline for the Swedish operator.

Despite this, customer numbers remained relatively unchanged at 1.4 million, with 89% of customers described as ‘green’ – those unaffected by problem gaming – and 83% of turnover generated by these ‘green’ players.

In terms of costs, these grew by 1% to SEK 2.2bn, with taxes of SEK 627m for the first half of the year. This was due in part to a 4% gambling tax hike in Sweden during the period, from 18% to 22%, with costs excluding tax totalling SEK 1.6bn, down by SEK 47m from this time last year.

Good to know: A March report from ATG found that a thriving unlicensed gaming market still thrived in Sweden

Overall, ATG’s operating profit came to SEK 671m, down SEK 170m.

On the results, CFO Lotta Nilsson said: “The way forward is about achieving revenue growth while tightly controlling costs to increase ATG’s results. One part of this effort is retaining our large customer base by developing our gaming offerings, and this fall, we have exciting news with V85, the new major horse racing game on Saturdays.”

The results follow recent accusations by ATG that Veikkaus, the current monopoly operator for gaming in the nation, is engaging in anti-competitive practices as the Finnish market gears towards demonopolisation.
