Danes spent less on gambling in June, with sports betting down 53.5%

Key points:

– Danish gambling spend fell 17% year-on-year in June 2025, to DKK 585m

– Betting revenue declined by 53.5%, attributed to the absence of the 2024 European Football Championship

– Online casino revenue rose 10%, continuing its strong growth trend

– Land-based casinos and slot machines saw modest decreases

Gambling spend in Denmark fell sharply in June 2025 compared to the same month last year, according to newly released figures from the Danish Gambling Authority (Spillemyndigheden).

The total gross gaming revenue (GGR) across all regulated gambling channels amounted to DKK 585m, representing a 17.0% decline year-on-year.

The data highlights a mixed picture for the Danish gambling market. While online casinos continued to expand, other gambling verticals reported declines – most notably sports betting.

Sports betting generated DKK 126m in June 2025, down 53.5% compared to June 2024. The Gambling Authority pointed to the European Football Championship, held last summer, as the main driver of the year-on-year decline. The tournament is typically associated with a surge in betting activity, and its absence this year led to a steep drop in revenue.

This decline in betting had a significant impact on the overall market figures, given that wagering normally accounts for a large share of monthly gambling spend in Denmark.

By contrast, online casinos reported an increase of 10% year-on-year, reaching DKK 333m in June. This continues a broader upward trend for the iGaming segment in Denmark, which has consistently posted strong growth figures throughout 2025.

Earlier this year, Spillemyndigheden revealed that iGaming spend rose by more than 40% year-on-year in May, marking one of the fastest growth rates since the current Danish Gambling Act came into effect in 2012.

Good to know: Online casinos now represent over half of the total gambling market in Denmark, with mobile play driving much of the expansion

Land-based casinos and gaming machines posted modest declines in June. Casino GGR fell 2.2% year-on-year to DKK 32m, while slot machines dropped 6.5% to DKK 92m. Meanwhile, land-based bingo remained steady at DKK 2m.

Although these declines were relatively minor compared to betting, they continue the pattern of gradual stagnation in land-based gambling as more Danish players migrate to online platforms.

The latest monthly report also includes figures from the Gambling Authority’s responsible gambling initiatives. These include ROFUS, the national self-exclusion register, and StopSpillet, a helpline for individuals experiencing gambling-related harm.

ROFUS has seen growing enrolment in recent years, surpassing 60,000 registrants earlier in 2025. Data from StopSpillet consistently shows that men aged 18–25 remain the most frequent users of the service.

The fall in gambling spend in June comes at a time of heightened regulatory oversight in Denmark. In July, Spillemyndigheden updated its marketing and sales promotion guidelines, introducing stricter disclosure requirements and limits on promotional offers.

In June, the authority also secured a court ruling to block 178 illegal gambling sites, the largest number ever banned at once in Denmark.
