Brazil: Bruno Henrique receives 12-match suspension after betting investigation

Key points:

– Bruno Henrique has been suspended for twelve matches and fined BR 60,000 ($11,021) in connection with a 2023 match-fixing investigation

– The ruling follows the STJD’s 1 August 2025, denunciation and the rejection of Flamengo’s request to apply the statute of limitations

Flamengo forward Bruno Henrique has been suspended for twelve matches and fined BR$60,000 by the Superior Tribunal de Justiça Desportiva (STJD) after a disciplinary hearing on 4 September 2025.

The case concerns allegations that Henrique deliberately received a yellow card during a 1 November 2023, match against Santos to benefit sports betting activities.

The STJD Prosecutor’s Office formally denounced Henrique and four other individuals, including his brother Wander Nunes Júnior, on 1 August 2025. Three additional amateur athletes were also implicated in the complaint.

If fully convicted, Henrique faced a potential two-year suspension, a 24-match ban and fines of up to BR200,000.

Good to know: A parallel legal process regarding the same allegations is ongoing at the Court of Justice of the Federal District

Earlier this year, Flamengo requested that the statute of limitations be applied to the case. The 1st Disciplinary Commission of the STJD rejected this request in a 4-1 vote, allowing the investigation to proceed.

A third-division soccer club from Campana, Argentina, was also accused of a match-fixing attempt on 6 August 2025.

During the match in Brasília, Henrique was shown a yellow card in injury time and later received a red card after disputing the referee’s decision. Messages exchanged between Henrique and his brother were submitted as evidence in the case.

The STJD’s decision was based on Articles 243 and 243-A of the Brazilian Code of Sports Justice, which address fraudulent conduct intended to influence match outcomes.
