Manchester police arrest man on charges related to horserace fixing

A man has been arrested in Bury by Greater Manchester Police (GMP) under suspicion of being involved in the fixing of horseraces.
The 42-year old suspect was detained during an early morning raid following a joint investigation by the GMP and the Gambling Commission (GC).
He is thought to potentially have been in breach of Section 42 of the Gambling Act 2005, which covers cheating.
A person is guilty of a Section 42 offence whether they themselves have cheated or simply enabled the cheating of another.
It is deemed immaterial whether they then won or improved their chances at all.
The man, if found guilty of the charges, could face imprisonment, with the maximum jail term being two years.
Good to know: The BHA voiced its concern around the start of 2025 after a report by the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities (IFHA) showed that engagement with unlicensed betting sites was on the up with respect to horseracing wagers
No more information has thus far been provided by the Gambling Commission nor the Greater Manchester Police. However, it is understood that the investigation began earlier this year, following reports of suspicious betting activity linked to horseracing.
British horseracing is already in a state of upheaval following the strikes on 10 September.
All scheduled racing was halted for the day in protest at proposed tax hikes, drawing the ire of the Betting and Gaming Council, which expressed its disappointment at the unprecedented industrial action.
