India’s online gambling ban pushes users towards offshore alternatives
Fantasy sports platforms halt cash games as legal and financial fallout spreads.
Key points:
– Ban halts fantasy cricket and card-based gambling platforms
– Users reportedly turn to VPNs and offshore websites
– Dream11 suspends cash contests and ends cricket team sponsorship
India’s sweeping ban on online gambling has triggered a wave of disruption across the gaming, advertising and sports sectors, while some users are already seeking ways to bypass restrictions.
As reported by Mathrubhumi, the law passed last month prohibits gambling on fantasy sports and online card games. Those found violating the ban may face imprisonment of up to five years.
Authorities have linked the decision to concerns over addiction, fraud and alleged ties to terrorism financing. Government figures show the industry was extracting US$2.3bn annually from around 450 million Indian users.
The ban has led fantasy sports giant Dream11, which serves 260 million users, to suspend all cash-based games and instead offer non-cash prizes such as electronics and vehicles. The company also terminated its US$43m jersey sponsorship deal with the Board of Control for Cricket in India.
Good to know: India’s fantasy sports sector previously supported major cricket sponsorships and contributed up to 40% of IPL advertising revenues
Despite restrictions, users are reportedly turning to unlicensed offshore platforms, often using virtual private networks and foreign credit systems. Adarsh Sharma, a regular fantasy player from Mumbai, described gambling as “a habit” and said many would continue to find alternative avenues.
Analysts warn that the decision could have lasting effects on the country’s sporting economy, particularly the Indian Premier League. Reduced ad spend from fantasy platforms may lower the future valuation of IPL media rights, set for renewal in 2027.
