Key points:

– IBJR Executive President Fernando Vieira has stepped down from his position

– He is now set to pursue alternative opportunities outside of the gambling industry

– The search for his successor is underway, with André Gelfi stepping in for the interim

The Executive President of the Brazilian Institute of Responsible Gaming (IBJR), Fernando Vieira, has officially announced his resignation – with the association’s current Director and Advisor André Gelfi stepping into the position as interim.

Indeed, Vieira’s resignation comes following an 11-month tenure in the position, as he looks to pursue alternative opportunities outside of the gaming sector. During his time as IBJR Executive President, Vieira helped steer the organisation through the regulation of the Brazilian gambling market – contributing to the inception of the association’s responsible gaming manifesto, assisting in public debates and aiding the fight against Brazil’s black market.

Speaking on his time with the IBJR, Vieira stated: “It was an honour to lead the IBJR at this historic regulatory milestone. Our fight to consolidate the market for betting operations licensed by the Federal Government and to combat illegal gambling was intense and yielded important achievements. I am proud of the role we played in protecting consumers and strengthening the industry’s credibility. I remain confident that the entity will continue to advance this mission.”

Good to know: Last week, IBJR also launched a new BetAlert tool to help identify regulated betting sites in Brazil

This latest update comes following additional recent news from the Brazilian market which saw the nation’s regulator, SPA, sign a new agreement with the National Advertising Self-Regulation Council (Conar) for the collaborative oversight of gambling advertising campaigns in the nation.

Despite being one of the world’s largest and most promising gambling markers, Brazil is still finding its feet of the journey to maturity, with a plethora of pitfalls and flashpoints in the market being discussed at SBC Lisbon during an expert panel last week.
