Germany: GGL prepares for annual National Day of Action Against Gambling Addiction
Last year, the nationwide action day resulted in over 1,500 tips regarding black-market activity from players across the country.
Key points:
– The German Gambling Authority is focusing on five key areas ahead of its yearly Gambling Addiction Action Day
– These include sports betting, gambling addiction and channelisation
The German Gambling Authority (GGL) has published a comprehensive article ahead of the country’s annual Gambling Addiction Action Day that highlights research, resources and important areas to focus on.
Under the motto “Gambling damage – recognise, name, avoid,” the Gambling Addiction Action Day will be part of an initiative to showcase how young people are at particular risk of gambling harm.
In the article, the Authority briefly discusses the importance of playing at regulated casinos and how addiction prevention is a core task for the GGL.
However, partway through the article, the GGL brings up the “controversial topic” of sports betting.
Sebastian Buchholz, Head of the Permits and Supervision of Legal Gambling Department at GGL, said: “Sports betting is a growing market, consistent supervision of legal providers is important in addition to combating illegal betting offers in order to protect players and ensure legal certainty in the market.”
He will hold a lecture at the symposium in Halle to discuss the current developments and challenges in online sports betting, as well as provide an update on where the current regulation stands on the matter.
Good to know: Buchholz was previously the Gambling Supervisor at the Ministry of the Interior and Sports, before serving as the Deputy Chair of the Gambling Board in Saxony-Anhalt
The article also contains signposting for gambling addiction helplines, websites and counselling centres around Germany, as well as the official whitelist for gambling companies.
While it still has some way to go before it can rival Safer Gambling Week (17-23 November 2025) in the UK and Responsible Gaming Education Month (September 2025) in the US, it is still commendable that the GGL is making an effort all the same.
The Authority was founded as recently as 2023 and has been battling stagnation in Germany’s regulation ever since.
