Florida to discuss DFS legalisation

Flor

ida is seeing new attempts to legalise daily fantasy sports (DFS) betting from both their House Representatives and Senators.

The first bill, known as Senate Bill 374, was proposed by the Senator of Western Hillsborough County, Dana Young. It concerns ‘Prohibiting certain fantasy contests; exempting fantasy contests from certain regulations, etc’.

House Bill 223, authored by eastern Seminole County Representative Jason Brodeur, is written as ‘Exempts fantasy contests from certain regulations’.

Both bills aim to legalise fantasy sports wagering. However, the two differ as the senate bill will look to prohibit college competitions from being included.

It must be noted that Florida has had two previous bills which focused on DraftKings and FanDuel. Despite being legalised in several other states at the same time, Florida saw both its bills defeated in 2016 and 2017.

Florida is looking to join the 16 other states which have already passed similar bills legalising DFS, as the United States begins a period of reviewing its online gambling regulations.

Senate Bill S 374 and House Bill H 223 will both appear in the legislative session for the state starting 1 January 2018.
