BoyleSports warns staff on impending Irish tax increase

BoyleSports management has sent a letter to its staff warning jobs could be under threat from the Irish betting tax increase.

In last week’s Irish Budget, Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe announced Ireland’s betting tax rate will double from 1% to 2% in January.

The policy has raised concern within the gambling industry over the future of shops and the job security of thousands of employees.

In response, operator BoyleSports, which opened its 250th shop in September, has sent a letter to all of its staff, warning them about their job security.

When contacted by Gambling Insider, BoyleSports confirmed the letter had been sent without providing further comment.

It read: "We are committed to making government and all relevant agencies understand the impact this poorly considered policy will have on the sector, our business, us and our families.

"We will take all steps available to safeguard our business, our industry and most importantly the employment of all our people."

Irish Bookmakers Association Chairperson Sharon Byrne exclusively told Gambling Insider last week she expects most independent operators to close if the tax increase is not reduced or modified.
