Netherlands' gaming regulation in "mild chaos," says gaming consultant

Gaming regulation in the Netherlands is in a state of "mild chaos," according to Gaming in Holland Founder Willem van Oort.

Outgoing Kansspelautoriteit chairman Jan Suyver recently criticised Dutch politicians for a lack of gaming legislation, cutting a frustrated figure before announcing his retirement.

Van Oort, a gaming consultant specialising in Dutch and Spanish regulation, can understand why, emphasising the large amount of initiatives in recent years that have yielded little in the way of definitive results.

Asked how he would describe gaming regulating in the Netherlands right now, he told Gambling Insider: "I would say mild chaos. There are a lot of initiatives and there’s very little progress.

"The political agenda is not clear. We have been looking at remote gaming being regulated for between seven and 10 years, depending on who you speak to. It’s again stuck in the senate; there will be a new round of questions, so that’s completely stuck.

"For a law that was already signed off by parliament two years ago, that’s not good for the market. It’s also not good for the consumers or even the tax office. But there seem to be other political forces at stake here."
