AGA expects $6bn in Super Bowl wagers

A study shows 22.7 million Americans will bet $6bn on the Super Bowl this year, according to the American Gaming Association (AGA).

Conducted on behalf of the AGA, Morning Consult surveyed a national sample of 2,201 adults on 22 January 2019.

The interviews took place online and the data was weighted to approximate a target sample of adults based on age, ethnicity, gender, educational level and region. The reported margin of error is +/-2% and greater among sub-groups.

Nearly one in 10 Americans, amounting to 22.7 million people, plan to place a bet on Super Bowl LIII, according to the Morning Consult data.

The study also examined Super Bowl wagers in the illegal market, claiming 1.8 million Americans plan to bet illegally through a bookie and millions more through offshore, online sportsbooks.

Bill Miller, AGA President and CEO, said: "More Americans than ever before will be able to place their bets with legal sportsbooks now operating in eight states, generating valuable revenue for state, local and tribal governments and increasing fan engagement with the game.

"These results, however, also point to the continued viability of the dangerous, illegal sports betting market in America. It is more important than ever for jurisdictions to enact sound policies that provide a safe, legal alternative with protections for the nearly 23 million Americans who will place a bet on the big game."
