Former Manchester City footballer handed five-year ban for match-fixing in Sweden

Former Manchester City and Nigeria international footballer Dickson Etuhu has been banned from all football activity in Sweden for five years for his involvement in match-fixing.

The midfielder was banned by the Swedish Football Association (SVFF), alongside former Swedish player Alban Jusufi, for contravening Section 1.4 of the association’s anti-match-fixing regulations.

The case refers to Etuhu and Jusufi attempting to bribe Etuhu’s AIK Solna teammate at the time, Kyriakos Stamatopoulos, to underperform in a match against IFK Gothenburg in May 2017.

According to the SVFF ruling, the pair tried to influence the outcome of the Swedish top-flight encounter, with Stamatopoulos offered SEK2M ($199,855) to throw the match, which was postponed after the goalkeeper reported the incident.

As a result, it was found the duo violated anti-match fixing-regulations, as judged by the Stockholm District Court and Svea High Court.

The pair were originally convicted of attempted match-fixing back in November 2019, although were sentenced to probation.

The ban stretches to the prohibition of training and competing in any sporting activities organised by the SVFF.

Etuhu hasn’t featured in any match in Sweden since October 2017, when playing for IFK Rössjöholm, which is incidentally the side Jusufi played for at the time of the incident, who hasn’t played since May 2018.
