Macau’s gaming employees see rise in wages
The average earnings for full-time employees amounted to MOP$26,750, an 8.2% increase compared to the previous year.
The Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) of Macau has recently published an update on the income and average wage of employees within the gambling sector.
According to the DSEC, June’s average earnings for full-time employees in the gaming sector saw an increase of 8.2% compared to the previous year, amounting to MOP$26,750 ($3,333.48). Dealers saw an average salary of MOP$21,660, an increase of 6.5% attributable to higher wages and extended working hours.
The recovery of tourism post-Covid-19 has led to an increased demand for labour in the sector, with job vacancies surging a staggering 340.7% rise year-on-year, totaling 498. The job vacancy rate also rose to 0.9%, compared to the previous year.
There were 52,518 full-time workers employed in the sector by the end of second quarter; a year-on-year increase of 825 employees, or 1.6%. However, the number of dealers fell slightly to 23,467; a decrease of 208 dealers, or 0.9% drop. About 1,492 new hires were also reported during this time period while 1,143 employees left their positions.
The recruitment rate climbed to 2.9%, while the turnover rate slightly decreased to 2.2%.
Earlier in the month, lawmakers had raised concerns regarding the health of gaming sector workers, pointing out that despite the industry’s recovery, the reestablishing of workers’ benefits back to pre-pandemic levels have not been done.
They also urged both the Macau Government and its gambling sector operators to enforce the protection of the welfare of said sector’s workers.
