Ukraine’s gambling regulator liquidated, with new body to be set up

Key points:

– CRGL has been dissolved after the signing of a bill

– A new body is set to be established to oversee gambling and lotteries in the region

– The bill seeks to help combat gambling addiction

A new body overseeing gambling is set to be established in Ukraine after the Commission for the Regulation of Gambling and Lotteries (CRGL) was liquidated.

This new body, which will replace the CRGL is proposed to be established by April, with a ministry also set to be established, overseeing policy within gambling and lotteries, while there will also be efforts introduced to help in restricting access to illegal gambling websites and mobile applications.

This comes as part of a bill signed by Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy which looks to help in combatting gambling addiction and to help in the general regulation of gambling and lotteries within the region.

Good to know: Last month, Ivan Rudyi, the head of Ukraine’s CRGL was detained for alleged ties to a Russian online casino

On top of all of this, there is also a ban on gambling advertising, with exceptions including advertising on TV and radio at night, on media for those over the age of 21, or on platforms and search engines with a target audience over the age of 21.

This comes after only in October, the Ukrainian Gambling Council (UGC) appealed to Google to reconsider its policy of blocking all gambling advertisements from licensed Ukrainian operators.
