Panda Interactive sues Genius Sports and Sportradar for antitrust violations

Panda Interactive is escalating its challenge against what it describes as anti-competitive practices in the sports betting technology market.

Panda Interactive sues Genius Sports and Sportradar for antitrust violations

Key points:

– Panda Interactive has filed an antitrust lawsuit against Genius Sports and Sportradar, alleging anti-competitive practices in the sports betting market

– The complaint claims both companies use their exclusive control over official sports data to force sportsbooks into restrictive technology agreements

– Panda is seeking legal intervention to prevent market manipulation and is pursuing damages for financial harm

Panda Interactive has filed an amended lawsuit against Genius Sports and Sportradar, alleging that both companies have engaged in anti-competitive practices that restrict fair competition in the sports betting market.

The complaint, originally filed in October 2023 for patent infringement, now includes antitrust claims, accusing the defendants of leveraging their exclusive control over official sports data to force sportsbooks into using their betting technology.

According to Panda, Genius Sports and Sportradar have long-term agreements with major sports leagues – including the NBA, NFL, NHL, MLB and NCAA – that give them exclusive access to real-time game data.

Panda alleges that these companies have used this control to coerce sportsbooks into adopting their technology as a condition for receiving official data, thereby limiting competition and consumer choice.

Panda is seeking legal action to prevent further anti-competitive conduct and is pursuing damages for financial harm caused by these alleged practices.

Good to know: Panda Interactive is represented by King & Spalding LLP in its legal proceedings.

The company argues that these tactics have prevented new entrants from competing in the market and have forced media companies and sportsbooks into restrictive contracts.

Commenting on the case, Andrew Schupak, Panda Interactive’s Chief Strategy Officer, stated: “A fair and open market fosters competition, drives progress and benefits everyone – sportsbooks, media companies and consumers alike. This case is about levelling the playing field for everyone.”

Sportradar also provided Gambing Insider with the following statement: Like most commercial enterprises, we do not comment on pending litigation matters – even unfounded litigation. That said, we can assure you that we operate our business in compliance with existing laws and regulations. We are confident in our defense of this matter and intend to defend these allegations vigorously.”
