DGOJ announces financial penalties on 14 illegal operators

Key points:

– Spain’s regulator has handed out €77.4m in fines to illegal operators

– 13 of the operators received €5m fines, with one being subject to a €10m penalty

– All penalised organisations have been barred from the Spanish market for two years

The General Directorate for the Regulation of Gambling (DGOJ) has announced €77.4m ($87.9m) in financial penalties divided out across 14 separate gambling operators for illegal wagering activity in Spain.

Indeed, the 14 organisations penalised as part of this update are: Wot NV, Magicwin games tech LTD, Winbet NV, Spicyjactpos games tech LTS, Lama tech limited, Chestoption limited liability company, Pennytech holding BV, Group gaem BV, Mibs NV, Fgs software solutions SRL, Investan NV, Tinietech holding BV, Adonio NV and Techsolutions group NV.

As highlighted by the regulator, 13 of the aforementioned operators received a respective fine of €5m for ‘very serious’ breaches of Spain’s gambling laws pertaining to unlicenced operations – with one unspecified operator of the 14 being subject to a €10m penalty. Further, all penalised organisations have been closed down and barred from the Spanish gambling market for a minimum of two years.

As part of its recent press release, the regulator said: “These sanctions reflect the DGOJ’s commitment to consumer protection and strict compliance with the legal framework for gambling in Spain, especially against unauthorised operators who jeopardise the safety of players.”

Good to know: In March, the 2024 State Online Gaming Market report revealed a 17.6% year-on-year increase in Spain’s online GGR – reaching €1.45bn for the full-year period

For the DGOJ, this latest update falls in the wake of its first ever gaming sector AML meeting, held in February this year, which brought together several gaming representatives and regulatory bodies from across the Spanish market.

More recently, the body met up with a number of its European counterparts in the UK at the Gambling Commission Spring Conference, to discuss crucial issues in the sector, including and especially identity theft in online gaming.
