As reported by The Daily Express, a woman in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia, will be fined RM1,000 ($213) or sentenced to three months’ imprisonment in default after she pleaded guilty to possessing illegal gambling items.
Natalia Nicole admitted before Magistrate Dzul Elmy Yunus to having two unauthorised lottery tickets on 20 May at Jalan Inanam Baru, Inanam. The charge was brought under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, which allows for a fine of up to RM5,000, imprisonment of up to six months, or both.
Police arrested Natalia after observing suspicious behaviour. During the search, officers seized a mobile phone, a portable printer, two lottery tickets and RM116 in cash.
Good to know: The Common Gaming Houses Act is regularly used to prosecute street-level gambling offences in Malaysia, particularly involving illegal lotteries.
The story is one of several from Malaysia this week. In Kedah, the local state government has defended its decision to stop renewing gaming licences in the area, despite claims that such a decision goes against federal authority. The Kedah State Governemnt argued that, under the Federal Constitution’s Ninth Schedule, specifically Item 4 of the State List, such licensing decisions can be made by the state.
