Key points:
– The Isle of Man Gambling Supervision Commission staff have undergone official modern slavery training
– Led by Maria Bridson, the training consisted of specialised awareness sessions on human trafficking, AML and labour exploitation
Staff members of the Isle of Man Gambling Supervision Commission (GSC) have attended a presentation by Maria Bridson, an senior advocate at BridsonHalsall Advocates, on modern slavery and labour exploitation on the island.
The presentation consisted of a specialised training and awareness session provided to GSC members by Bridson on topics such as human trafficking (HT), AML and labour exploitation of the Isle of Man. Indeed, Bridson yields a specialised knowledge of the Isle of Man’s immigration laws and presented stories of individuals who had suffered exploitation by criminal syndicates across the globe. More broadly, the session was conducted with a view to improving the GSC’s collaborative efforts in both domestic and international data sharing as a preventative measure against modern slavery related crimes.
As part of its latest press release detailing the event, the GSC stated: “The GSC is working collaboratively with agencies, increasing our ability to share information in order to update our understanding of jurisdictional and sectoral risk. These efforts are to be published as part of the Isle of Man’s National Risk Assessment and associated communications, such as the upcoming National Risk Appetite Statement. As well as strengthening entry control processes internally to ensure the GSC upholds a strong regulatory framework.”
Good to know: Last month, the Isle of Man GSC announced the enhancement of its information sharing framework
These enhancements included steps that had been taken over several months to improve the commission’s information sharing capabilities.
Also recently, the regulatory body announced the appointment of new Chairman Gregory Petts, who brings five years of experience as a commission member with him to his new role – in which he will help oversee regulatory standards within the island’s gaming market.
