Australia: Minister hears of crypto scams and cash network crackdowns

Minister for Home Affairs Tony Burke has received a comprehensive update on AUSTRAC’s efforts to tackle financial crime during a recent visit to the agency’s Sydney headquarters, according to a press release issued by the regulator.
During the visit, AUSTRAC’s Cryptocurrency Taskforce shared findings from the first phase of its work, including insights into the usage of crypto ATMs. It revealed that the 60–70 age group accounted for 29 percent of total transaction value, prompting concern about scam activity and financial vulnerability.
Further investigations showed that many of the largest crypto ATM transactions were linked to either scam victims, money mules or suspected offenders. The taskforce was formed in response to the rapid expansion of crypto ATMs in Australia and the risks they pose in laundering illicit funds.
Minister Burke also observed operations at the Fintel Alliance’s Collaborative Analytics Hub, where financial crime experts from five major banks worked alongside law enforcement to process large volumes of data over three days. Their joint effort focused on detecting abnormal cash transaction patterns and identifying networks suspected of money laundering or related offences.

The hub, based in Sydney and Melbourne, represents a cornerstone of AUSTRAC’s data-driven public-private strategy. It allows for faster detection of previously hidden financial activity, with several law enforcement referrals already underway.
