Key points:

– His exit follows his upcoming mayoral role in Delft

– He led major board changes and supported the launch of the online market

Alexander Pechtold has confirmed he will resign as Chairman and member of the Supervisory Board of the Nederlandse Loterij, effective on 1 January 2026.

The announcement follows his appointment as Mayor of Delft, a role he will assume in September this year.

Pechtold was recently reappointed to a second term at the request of the Ministry of Finance, which holds shares in the Dutch Lottery.

However, due to his new political responsibilities, he has opted to step down early to facilitate a leadership transition.

Pechtold has been in the position since April 2021, during which time he played a central role in reshaping the Board and steering the Lottery through the launch of the regulated online gambling market.

He also helped appoint a new CEO and additional board members, alongside supporting the Lottery’s public positioning as a responsible gambling operator.

In a statement, Pechtold praised the company’s team and its future strategy, saying he would remain fully involved until January to ensure a smooth handover.

Council member Frida van den Maagdenberg said the group “regrets” his departure, acknowledging his leadership and professionalism over the past four years.

The council is currently seeking a successor to take over the position.
