Macau’s average daily gaming revenue dips 3% amid Typhoon Wipha
Mid-July slowdown attributed to weather disruption, though monthly outlook remains stable.
Key points:
– Typhoon Wipha caused a slight week-on-week drop in Macau’s gaming revenue
– Mid-month average daily GGR reached MOP 657m (US$81.5m), down 3% from the previous week
– Full-month forecast remains at MOP 21bn, or 86% of July 2019 levels
Macau’s gross gaming revenue (GGR) saw a moderate decline in the week ending 20 July, as Typhoon Wipha disrupted travel plans and visitor flows.
According to a report by Macao Daily citing investment bank estimates, the average daily GGR during the week fell by around 3% to MOP 657m, compared to MOP 679m the week before.
Despite the week-on-week dip, revenue remains significantly higher than the MOP 600m daily average recorded in July 2024. From 1 to 20 July, total gaming revenue was estimated at MOP 13.57bn. Analysts at Citi have maintained their projection for full-month revenue to reach MOP 21bn, equivalent to 86% of pre-pandemic levels in July 2019 and a 13% year-on-year increase.
VIP turnover was estimated to be down by 3–5% month-on-month, while mass market gaming revenue saw a slightly smaller decline of 2–4%. However, improved VIP win rates partially offset the drop in volume.
Good to know: Macau’s full recovery trajectory is closely tied to stable VIP volumes, mass market resilience and entertainment-driven visitation, such as concert tourism
UBS offered a slightly higher estimate, suggesting the average daily GGR for July to date stood at MOP 683m. This reflects a 14% year-on-year rise, though still 3% below June’s figures.
The bank said the data exceeded market expectations, which ranged between MOP 650m and MOP 660m.
Analysts believe upcoming entertainment events will help sustain daily gaming performance through the remainder of the month.
