PTSB introduces voluntary card-blocking for Irish players
This new measure has been encouraged by the nation’s gambling regulator.
Key points:
– Irish bank PTSB has introduced a new card-blocking feature for gambling transactions
– This implementation follows numerous similar initiatives by banks in the nation
– The GRAI has also announced that the development of a national self-exclusion register is underway
Irish bank Permanent TSB (PTSB) has announced the introduction of a new voluntary card-blocking initiative for gamblers in Ireland looking to cease card transactions related to gambling.
This latest initiative comes off the back of a recommendation submitted by the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland (GRAI) for the implementation of additional financial protections in the Irish market.
Indeed, the Authority has been in collaboration with both the Irish Banking Culture Board and the Irish Banking and Payments Federation – alongside individual banking entities – to oversee the introduction of additional player protection measure related to finance.
As such, banks including Revolut, AIB, EBS, the Bank of Ireland and now PTSB have all now announced blocking measures for the Irish market.
Speaking on this latest implementation, GRAI CEO Anne Marie Caulfield said: ‘’We very much welcome PTSB’s introduction of an in-app gambling block, this represents a proactive and valuable consumer protection measure helping to reduce the risk of gambling-related harms.’’
Also clarified as part of this latest announcement is the development of a new nationwide self-exclusion initiative, which is now – according to the GRAI – underway.
Good to know: Ireland introduced a new regulatory framework for gambling in October 2024
Following on from this legislative overhaul, the GRAI was incepted to oversee the Irish gambling market in March this year, with the nation’s regulatory body also being subject to relocation in Dublin a month later in April.
More recently, earlier this month the GRAI also published new licensing guidelines ahead of the launch of its new market system later this year.
