Allwyn begins rollout of 30,000 new National Lottery terminals

Key points:

– Allwyn is deploying over 30,000 new Wave lottery terminals to replace legacy Altura machines dating from 2009, following completion of the largest National Lottery technical upgrade in history

– The new terminals feature advanced technology, including faster processors, enhanced screens and improved functionality for both retailers and customers

Allwyn has commenced the deployment of over 30,000 new Wave lottery terminals across UK retail locations, following the completion of what the company describes as the largest technical upgrade in National Lottery history.

The rollout targets retailers currently using legacy Altura machines, most of which date back to 2009.

The new Wave terminals incorporate updated technology designed to improve transaction speeds and functionality for both retailers and customers.

Features include high-speed processors, larger tilt-adjustable LCD screens, wireless barcode scanners and enhanced play slip readers that accept both horizontal and vertical feeding.

The terminals also provide retailers with improved reporting capabilities and the ability to modify numbers on National Lottery Fast Pay cards.

Earlier in 2025, approximately 8,000 retailers received Wave terminals, primarily those previously using Compact Lottery Terminals (CLTs) that operated on different systems from the network-wide upgrade.

The technical overhaul, completed between 2-4 August, involved implementing over 30 new technology systems, rebuilding the back-end gaming platform, establishing a new Vodafone-provided in-store network and migrating retailer records and millions of transactions from legacy systems.

Following the technical upgrade’s completion, Allwyn began the national Wave terminal rollout on 11 August.

The company plans to replace nearly 4,000 Altura terminals by the end of August, with thousands more installations scheduled weekly from September across all UK postcode districts.

Good to know: According to Allwyn’s Director of Operations, Jenny Blogg, the company has invested over £350m ($471m) in transforming National Lottery operations and technology

The upgrade supports plans for new games and improved player experiences, with a commitment to double returns to good causes from £30m to £60m weekly by the end of its 10-year licence period.

The rollout occurs amid broader organisational changes for Allwyn, including the July departure announcement of North American Chief Executive Wayne Pickup after eight years, and the company’s securing of a €2.15bn ($2.5bn) syndicated credit facility to support growth initiatives and refinance existing debt.
