Korean authorities bust $71.5m underground foreign exchange ring
Ten suspects charged over unauthorised foreign exchange operations.
Key points:
– KRW 137bn (US$71.5m) in gambling-linked funds smuggled overseas
– Couriers flew more than 500 times with undeclared cash in bags
– Investigation into fund origin and customers remains ongoing
South Korea’s customs agency has dismantled an underground network accused of illegally transferring gambling-related funds to the Philippines.
As reported by The Korea Times, 10 individuals have been apprehended and referred to the Seoul Central District Prosecutors Office for violations of foreign exchange regulations.
According to the Korea Customs Service, the suspects facilitated the unauthorised exchange of approximately KRW 137bn. The funds, primarily intended for gambling purposes, were collected either in cash or through domestic bank transfers. The money was then converted into US dollars and physically transported out of the country using luggage and golf bags.
Authorities suspect that the recipients were engaged in unregulated gambling activities abroad. Investigators are now expanding their efforts to identify the individuals who initiated these transactions and to determine the sources of the funds involved.
The customs agency has alerted other relevant government bodies to further scrutinise any potentially illicit financial activities linked to the operation.
Good to know: Each courier allegedly carried an average of US$200,000 per flight across a total of 519 journeys to the Philippines
Under South Korean law, unauthorised remittance of funds abroad, particularly in connection with gambling, constitutes a serious offence subject to legal penalties.
This enforcement action forms part of a broader initiative to stem illegal capital flows and tighten oversight of foreign exchange practices.
