Brazilian SPA signs advertising cooperation agreement with Conar

Key points:

– Brazil’s SPA has partnered with the National Advertising Self-Regulation Council

– The pair are looking to increase the oversight of gambling advertising in the nation

Brazil’s Ministry of Finance’s Prizes and Betting Secretariat (SPA-MF) has entered into collaboration with the National Advertising Self-Regulation Council (Conar) for the enhanced oversight of advertising campaigns in the nation’s gambling sector.

This partnership is set to address irregular and illegal advertisements in Brazil’s fixed-odds betting market by establishing a clear channel of communications between the SPA and Conar for improved monitoring methods and information gathering.

Indeed, the pair will also oversee the implementation of educational campaigns and additional related initiatives to help tackle illegal activity in Brazil’s gambling advertisement sector, with a particular focus of protecting children and adolescents from gambling exposure.

Speaking on this latest announcement, SPA Secretary, Regis Dudena, said: “We know that advertising plays a central role in how society views and accesses betting and commercial promotions. Therefore, we cannot allow messages from illegal agents, or those that mislead or encourage harmful practices, much less those that reach vulnerable groups, such as children and adolescents.”

This latest news falls in the wake of an additional similar partnership agreement signed between the SPA and Integrity Compliance 360 in April, which drew focus on combating fraudulent sports betting activity in Brazil’s market.

Good to know: In the past week, Brazil has restricted social benefit recipients from online gambling deposits, with the National Telecommunications Agency also having blocked 18,000 domains

Also commenting on this latest collaborative arrangement, Conar President, Sergio Pompilio, stated: “This is a significant milestone.

“The combined efforts of regulation and self-regulation have established themselves as a modern and sought-after approach in most countries, essential for facing the challenges ahead, especially in high-impact segments like betting.

“We are confident that this partnership will further strengthen our commitment to socially responsible advertising and contribute to a future of responsible and sustainable innovation.”
