Paradise Entertainment appeals Macau patent ruling against Light & Wonder
The group said it remains confident in the validity of its patents after a local court declared them null and void.
Key points:
– Macau court dismisses Paradise Entertainment’s two electronic table game patent claims
– Company has filed an appeal, citing importance of intellectual property protection
– Decision comes as Paradise grows live dealer machine footprint in Macau and Southeast Asia
Paradise Entertainment has confirmed that it is appealing a decision by the Macau Judicial Court of First Instance which dismissed patent claims filed by its subsidiaries, including LT Game Limited, against subsidiaries of Light & Wonder.
The case centred on two patents registered in Macau covering electronic table games. Although these patents had been processed through formal regulatory channels, the court ruled they did not meet the necessary legal requirements and declared them invalid.
Paradise stated that it “strongly disagrees” with the judgment but will respect the legal process.
The company said in its announcement that it considers the protection of intellectual property essential for “fostering innovation, securing business development and instilling confidence” in both clients and the wider gaming sector.
Good to know: Earlier this year, Paradise reported that orders for its live dealer machines in Macau had grown from 300 to over 1,400 units in two years
Revenue from live machines rose by 26% year-on-year in Q1 2025, underscoring the increasing role of automation in the city’s casino floors.
The company added that it is unable to comment further on the case while the appeal is ongoing. Paradise, however, reiterated confidence in the innovative contributions its technology has made to the industry.
The ruling comes during a period of expansion for Paradise. Beyond Macau, the group has relocated its R&D to mainland China to cut costs, while also expanding into Southeast Asian markets including the Philippines, Laos, Vietnam and Sri Lanka. It has also announced plans to double its annual slot game output, supported by its new office in Manila.
Paradise is expected to publish its full annual results on 26 September 2025, when further updates on the patent dispute may be disclosed.
