The Remote Gambling Act in the Netherlands was long awaited, taking years to come to the fore amid many political delays.

However, on 1 October 2021, the Dutch online gambling market finally launched and, almost a year on, Smart Gaming has now joined the list of gambling companies allowed to operate within this regulated market.

It has been a much-discussed region, with advertising and marketing complaints followed up by regulatory scrutiny.

Many operators who offered gambling in the Netherlands previously, meanwhile, were forced to undergo a cool-off period before being able to re-enter the market on a legal basis.

According to the Dutch regulator, the Kansspelautoriteit (KSA), the domain name with which Smart Gaming BV will operate is as of yet unknown.

As soon as it is confirmed, the KSA says the domain name will be stated in its Kansspelwizer.

Roughly this time last year, the KSA announced the first batch of licence holders, which was 10-strong and incuded the likes of Betent, Bet365, LiveScore Malta and more.

In other recent KSA news, a research programme sponsored by the regulator will begin this year.

It will run for three years and contribute to policy goals outlined in the Netherlands’ Remote Gambling Act, chiefly addiction treatment and prevention.

In July, however, the KSA issued a warning over "promotional games of chance."

The body added: “If they [operators] do this, they must take into account that the stricter rules according to the Gambling Act and the associated lower regulations apply to them."
