Liquor & Gaming New South Wales (NSW) will oversee trials of cashless gaming technology, hosted by The Independent Panel on Gaming Reform.

Following Liquor & Gaming NSW’s recent cashless gaming trials with the likes of Aristocrat, Utopia, IGT and Light & Wonder, the regulator is opening up invitations to apply to participate in the cashless gaming trial.

The Independent Panel on Gaming Reform has issued invitations for venues and technology providers to apply to participate.

In order to take part in the cashless gaming trials, applicants must meet the minimum requirements set by The Independent Panel, including harm minimisation protections, anti-money laundering protections and data security & privacy protections.

Applications will close on 13 October 2023.

The trials will be held with an end-game of informing a future regulatory framework to allow for cashless gaming to be approved in NSW.

On its site, Liquor & Gaming NSW states: “The trials will assess how these cashless gaming solutions operate in real-world conditions in clubs and hotels. The impact of these technologies will be identified, monitored and assessed by an independent researcher. The research methodologies, developed by the independent researchers, are customised to each specific technology.”

The research aims to find out about: changes in players' attitudes and behaviours due to the use of technology.

The research also wants to find out the length of sessions as well as frequency and the level of harm experienced; as well as areas for improvement to reduce gambling harm.

Each trial is expected to run for at least three months to ensure there is sufficient data to address these key areas.
