Churchill Downs expands with new Rosie’s Gaming Emporium in Emporia
Churchill Downs Incorporated (CDI) has opened a new Rosie's Gaming Emporium in Emporia, Virginia. This establishment features 150 historical racing machines (HRMs), simulcast horse racing, a restaurant and a bar. CDI marked this occasion by donating $25,000 to support five local charities.
With the recent opening of a new location in Emporia, Virginia. This brings the total number of Rosie’s Gaming Emporiums to seven, with additional locations planned.
In recent months, CDI has made several acquisitions and investments. In August 2023, CDI acquired Exacta Systems, a provider of technology for historical horse racing (HHR) operations. This $250m acquisition is expected to expand CDI’s HHR footprint and generate operational synergies.
In November 2022, CDI partnered with DraftKings to launch DK Horse, a standalone app for horseracing betting.
CDI is also investing in its safety protocols. In June 2023, the company temporarily halted racing operations at Churchill Downs Racetrack due to an unusually high number of horse injuries. This decision was made in consultation with the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission (KHRC) and the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA).
CDI is also developing new entertainment destinations. In 2023, CDI announced plans to develop a new historical racing machine (HRM) entertainment complex in Eastern Daviess County, Kentucky. This complex is expected to feature HHR machines, simulcast horse racing, a restaurant and a bar.
CDI’s land-based expansion efforts have contributed to the company’s overall growth. CDI reported revenue of $1.59b in 2021, a 52% increase from the previous year. Adjusted EBITDA reached a record high of $627m.
