Betstop, the Australian national self-exclusion register, allows individuals to exclude themselves from all Australian licensed wagering services. The register was launched on 21 August 2023 and has had a continuous stream of registrants ever since.

The total number of registrants nationwide now stands at 13,608.

According to the statistics provided in the November report, the overall number of new registrants (across all states and territories) dropped from 3,121 in October to 2,991 in November, marking a 4.2% decrease from the previous month.

When compared to August, the month in which the register was launched, this drop is even steeper, with a 22.9% overall decrease in new registrants in November compared to August. It seems after the initial launch that numbers are beginning to stabilise as more individuals sign up.

In general, every jurisdiction in Australia saw a decrease in registrants from October to November, with just two exceptions to this rule.

The first exception was Victoria, which had 869 new registrants in October versus 881 new registrants in November, marking a 1.4% increase overall.

The other exception was the Northern Territory, which rose from 20 new registrants in October to 29 new registrants in November, marking a 45% increase in registrants compared to the previous month.

Across the world, self-exclusion registers have become a notable tool in tackling problem gambling. Spelpaus, the Swedish self-exclusion register, reported 100,000 registrants in late October.
