The National Lottery Community Fund has published its latest research into the UK’s community spirit.

The results came from an annual survey that was held through the Community Research Index, which asked over 8,000 people for their opinions.

According to the survey, 72% of respondents said it was important for them to feel part of their local community, while 59% said community spirit was strong in their area.

The key benefits to interacting with a community, according to the report, were 59% of people felt safer and 55% felt a sense of belonging.

David Knott, The National Lottery Community Fund CEO, said: “It’s clear that 2024 will be another year where communities pull together to tackle shared challenges and to support each other.

“A continued sense of community spirit and belonging, and a desire to be involved (including volunteering) are welcome bright spots that set the tone for the year ahead.

“Local people know what their community needs and have the passion, energy and know-how to make it happen.”

However, while 64% said they are willing to improve their local community, only 46% felt that they could actually play a role.

Out of the 8,000 people who responded to the survey, 50% said that they intended to take part in volunteering activities this year, with 14% saying it would be their first time.

Knott continued: “This year they will have even more grassroots funding support as we have doubled the amount and term of our small grants programme, National Lottery Awards for All.

“It’s a key part of our drive to use our funding to strengthen society and improve lives across the UK in 2024 and beyond.”

Earlier today, it was reported that The National Lottery gifted QPR in the Community Trust a box of unique footballs.
