The British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC) has been granted Level 4 certification by the World Lottery Association (WLA) for its player health programs.

As part of the certification, the IAP acknowledged BCLC’s Player Education program with a ‘Best Practice’ outcome, identifying certain program elements as ‘clearly beyond the norm’ and indicative of ‘innovative policies, practices or evaluation measures’.

The IAP cited BCLC’s ‘various targeted initiatives and set of evaluation measures’ and recognised the organisation’s ‘ambitious plans moving forward’ in its evaluation report.

BCLC's CCO and VP, Legal, Compliance and Security, Marie-Noëlle Savoie, stated: “Receiving re-certification at Level 4 and the ‘Best Practice’ distinction is a strong endorsement of BCLC’s player-centric approach and evidence of the continuous improvement of our player health programs.”

Various elements of BCLC’s player health program, including research initiatives, employee training, player safeguards and stakeholder engagement activities, were found to meet or exceed industry standards. Notably, BCLC is one of 13 lottery jurisdictions in North America to achieve Level 4 certification.

In its submission for certification, BCLC highlighted initiatives such as the virtual GameSense Advisor (GSA) program, an active reinstatement requirement in its Game Break voluntary self-exclusion program and enhanced identification requirements at BC casinos. The GameSense brand, available to other commercial gambling entities through licensing, was also mentioned.

BCLC's WLA certification is valid for three years. This development follows the recent release of BCLC’s annual report, 'Winning With Purpose: BCLC's Annual Report,’ showcasing progress towards its environmental, social and governance (ESG) goals during 2022/23.

The report concentrated on BCLC's focus on responsible gambling, indigenous reconciliation, diversity, equity, accessibility and environmental sustainability.

In a past initiative, BCLC collaborated with Instant Win Gaming (IWG) to introduce the Set for Life game on PlayNow.com.
